Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Service at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)
David Costello graduated from Texas A&M University in 1991 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He joined Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) as a field application engineer and later served as a regional service manager, senior application engineer, technical support director, and national sales and customer service director. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Customer Service, and works in Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas.
David has authored more than 30 technical papers and 25 application guides. He was honored to receive the 2008 Walter A. Elmore Best Paper Award from the Georgia Institute of Technology Protective Relaying Conference, the 2013 Outstanding Engineer Award from the Central Texas section of the IEEE Power and Energy Society, and the 2016 Best Overall Technical Presentation Award from the NETA PowerTest Conference.
He is a senior member of IEEE, a registered professional engineer in Texas and Michigan, and a member of the planning committee for the Conference for Protective Relay Engineers at Texas A&M University.
Principal Advisor and Regional Manager at Quanta Technology
Ashok Gopalakrishnan, Principal Advisor and Regional Manager, has over 18 years of industry experience, working in India and the United States. He is highly experienced in the computer-aided analysis of electrical power systems, and has developed advanced automation techniques to help analyze complex protection coordination issues. Ashok has also participated in several system protection engineering studies for utilities and consulting companies. He is an expert in the usage and application of the Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE) software, having been intimately involved in its development for over a decade. At Quanta Technology, he manages the Boston office P & C team, and provides support and guidance for relay settings projects, protection coordination studies at the transmission and distribution levels, and for NERC compliance studies.
Lead Research Development and Demonstration Engineer at National Grid
Babak Enayati received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY in 2009. He is currently a Lead Research Development and Demonstration Engineer at National Grid, Waltham, MA. He joined IEEE in 2006 and currently is Senior Member, IEEE and the IEEE PES Governing Board Member-At-Large. Babak is the Vice Chair of the IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee 21 (SCC21) and IEEE 1547, Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems. Babak is also the Chair of IEEE PES Distributed Resources Integration working group. Babak is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Massachusetts.
Director of the Major Underground Department at CenterPoint Energy
Bob Roy works at CenterPoint Energy as the director of the Major Underground Department, where he has been for the last 4 years. This department is responsible for electric service in downtown Houston, The Texas Medical Center, both Houston airports, The Galleria, and any three-phase padmount transformer service in the CenterPoint Electric footprint. Bob also has deep experience in Substation Engineering, Distribution Operations, and knows enough about Regulatory to be dangerous. Bob graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston in 1982 with a BS in Electrical Technology.
Business Development Manager at G&W
Daniel Wycklendt is a registered Professional Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the Electrical Industry. He has had various roles and responsibilities while working for different companies in this Industry. The experiences gained from working as a Designer for an Engineering Consultant, an Electrical Engineer at an IOU, and a Sales and Marketing professional for various Electrical Equipment manufacturers provides him with a unique perspective on the industries’ needs and wants, and how to meet them. Dan holds a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.
Director, Smart Grid and System Operations at Austin Energy
Danny joined Austin Energy in 2006 and is currently the Director of Smart Grid and System Operations responsible for advancing Austin Energy’s Smart Utility Vision. Prior to Danny’s current role, he held the position of Power System Principal Engineer leading the Reliability and Power Quality group. Prior to joining Austin Energy, Danny worked in various engineering capacities in the Refining, Electric Utility and Communications industries. He received his Bachelor and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. Danny is passionate in helping others in need. He recently volunteered as the Planning Chief for the Carolina Region Incident Command Team in Puerto Rico for a month to assist in the restoration effort.
Utility Marketing Manager at Eaton
Jacob Chacko is the Utility Marketing Manager at Eaton. He is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of utility marketing programs across North America. He has a BSEE from Iowa State University and a MBA from St. Ambrose University. He is a registered Professional Engineer (Colorado) and a certified project management professional. Mr. Chacko’s experience includes Engineering, system modernization, training, construction, operations and project management both in the electrical utility and industrial environment.
Reliability, Principle Engineer at AEP Texas
Jeff Helton is a registered PE in Texas. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. He started working for West Texas Utilities in 1983. He has worked for WTU, CSW (Central & Southwest Corp), and AEP for 33 years. During this time he has held various roles in distribution operations, distribution standards, metering, and is presently in AEP reliability group as a principle engineer.
Founder and President at GERS
Juan M. Gers obtained his BSc in Electrical Engineer at University of Valle, Colombia, in 1977. In 1981 he finished his MSc in Power Systems at the University of Salford in England and his PhD in 1998 at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland with a research in Distribution Systems Automation. Dr. Gers worked from 1977 to 1979 for the government owned utility CVC (now EPSA) as substation design engineer. In 1981 he founded GERS which is a consulting engineering company specialized in power systems. He was lecturer at University of Valle for more than 20 years and Vice minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia in 2002.
Besides his consulting activities, he devotes time to academic activities and is in charge of several Power Systems courses at Penn State University and Gonzaga University. He is co-author of a book entitled Protection of electricity distribution networks”, published in 1998 by the IEE (now IET) with a third edition in 2011, author of book entitled “Distribution System Analysis and Automation, published also by The Institution of Engineering and Technology-IET, London, United Kingdom, 2013 and author/co-author of over 40 technical papers. Dr. Gers is a Chartered Engineer of the IET and Member of IEEE. Currently he participates in several groups of the Power System Relaying Committee – PSRC of the IEEE.

Dr. Julio Romero Agüero is Vice President, Strategy and Business Innovation at Quanta Technology. He has 22 years of industry experience and specializes in grid modernization, technology strategy, smart grid, planning, reliability, operations, and analysis of power distribution systems, and integration of distributed energy resources and emerging technologies. He has developed solutions in these areas for utilities in the USA, Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, Chair of the IEEE Distribution Subcommittee, Chair of the IEEE Working Group on Distributed Resources Integration, Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, and member of the Advisory Committee of DistribuTECH.
Sr. Automation Engineer at G&W
Nic DiFonzo is a Senior Automation Engineer with G&W Electric. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). He started at G&W Electric as a Switchgear Design Engineer. In this role he focused on control cabinet specification and design, along with basic relay protection programming. After growing his knowledge base for switchgear and relay protection through continuing education coupled with field experience he advanced his career by becoming part of G&W’s Lazer Automation team. In this role he continues to expand upon his aptitude for smart grid technology by writing specifications, programming customized automation schemes, and commissioning a wide range of automation solutions.
Assistant Manager of Engineering Services at S&C Electric
Paul Pabst, PE, is Assistant Manager of Engineering Services in the Power Systems Solutions Division of S&C Electric Company with ten years of experience in the electric power industry. He has been the technical lead on multiple 1MW microgrid systems with generation sources that include lithium ion energy storage, PV solar, wind, natural gas, propane. These microgrid systems utilize advanced protective relaying and control schemes.
Other responsibilities include technical lead of protection & control (P&C) systems, SCADA integration design, control enclosure design, field start-up and commissioning of green field and brown field substations, and design and full-scale testing of distribution automation systems.
Reliability Engineer at ComEd
Ricardo Carrera is a Reliability Engineer in the Distribution Automation group at ComEd in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. In his role, Ricardo is responsible for developing and enhancing the device and control schemes for the existing and new devices installed. He also oversees system performance and health by analyzing and troubleshooting system events to ensure DA equipment operates per engineering design.
The DA group has been Ricardo first role in his career with ComEd and within the electric utility industry. Before that, Ricardo received a BSEE from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana with a focus in Power and Energy Systems.
Regional Application Specialist at OMICRON
Robert Wang is a Regional Application Specialist and Application Engineer at OMICRON electronics. He is responsible for market research, product development, and implementation of OMICRON products with a particular focus on the distribution market. Robert received his BSEE from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and his MEng in Power Systems Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Reliability Engineer at ComEd
Tiffany Wynne is a reliability engineer in the Distribution Automation group at ComEd in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. In her role, Tiffany manages the Distribution Automation program leading the strategic deployment of automation devices across ComEd’s service territory to maximize the reliability benefit. She is also responsible for developing the device and scheme control engineering for the devices that are deployed, and oversees system performance and health by analyzing system events to ensure operation of DA equipment per engineering design.
Prior to the DA group, she worked in Operations as a Distribution System Operator where she controlled the planned, emergent, and emergency switching performed by field personnel. Tiffany received a BSEE from the University of Illinois-Chicago and is currently pursuing an MBA at Saint Xavier University.
