Partial Discharge and Instrument Transformer Workshop

September 10 - 11, 2019

Mississippi State

OMICRON and Mississippi State University are proud to offer a two-part workshop. The workshop will cover Partial Discharge measurements, and also cover separately everything you need to know about Instrument Transformers.

Part 1 - Partial Discharge (PD)
September 10
Partial Discharge (PD) phenomena are localized dielectric breakdowns of a small portion of a solid or liquid electric insulation that is subjected to high voltage stress. PD often precedes an insulation breakdown which can result in cost-intensive repairs and possibly prolonged outages. The measurement of PD is a major criterion for the quality of power systems for assets like rotating machines, cables, and power transformers.

Topics Include:

  • Theory and Introduction to PD
  • Online PD Monitoring
  • Summary of International Standards
  • PD Measurements on Rotating Machines
  • PD Measurements on Medium Voltage and High Voltage Cables
  • PD Measurements of Power Transformers

Part 2 - Instrument Transformers
September 11
This workshop will provide an introduction to instrument transformers design and testing, including a comparison of conventional methods verses innovative test methods. Application examples will be provided, including a review of practical experiences of performing the following tests on both protection and metering VTs and CTs. Additionally, obstacle associated with testing transformer bushing CTs and stand-alone CCVTs will be investigated.

Assessment techniques will include:

  • Winding Resistance test
  • Excitation Test
  • Ratio and Phase Displacement Error
  • Polarity test
