StationGuard 2.30 Feature Preview: Automatic Device Classification

April 24, 2023

We are pleased to announce that our StationGuard 2.30 will include a new feature that makes it easier than ever to assess and secure your OT network: Automatic device classification based on network traffic.

StationGuard configuration does not rely on establishing a baseline of network activity during a setup (learning) phase. It creates a detailed allow-list based on the roles assigned to each device. The new automatic device classification further simplifies this configuration. It allows you to quickly and effortlessly categorize all of the devices on your network, making it easier to identify potential vulnerabilities and create effective security policies.

How will the new feature improve security and engineering operations?

  • Quick and easy device categorization: The automatic device classification helps you quickly identify the different types of devices on your network and reduce the effort of assigning them to specific network zones. You can easily create graphical groups for devices such as PCs, IEDs, or network devices.

  • Lower total cost of ownership: Automatic device classification can also help lower the total cost of ownership for StationGuard. With less effort required to configure the system, OT security officers and substation engineers can spend less time on routine tasks and more time on other important work.

  •

  • Faster configuration and maintenance: Substation engineers are often responsible for maintaining many devices, and adding a new IDS system such as StationGuard can create additional workload. However, with automatic device classification, the process of configuring StationGuard becomes much faster and easier. Role assignment is done during the initial configuration, making it easier to identify and find devices that are not already defined in the SCL file.
