We focus on the topic of cyber security in Part 3 of our Energy Talks miniseries called “Digital Transformation in the Power Industry”. In this episode, OMICRON cyber security experts Thomas Friedel and Eugenio Carvalheira discuss the importance of cyber security in the digital transformation and how it plays a critical role in power system infrastructures.

They describe recent cyber security directives in Europe and North America and their implications for power system organizations around the world. They also discuss the challenges these organizations face when implementing cyber security and offer tips to meet these challenges.

In this episode, OMICRON cyber security experts Thomas Friedel and Eugenio Carvalheira discuss the importance of cyber security in the digital transformation and how it plays a critical role in power system infrastructures.

Some governments, such as in Germany, have introduced laws which require all companies with critical infrastructures to fulfil a certain level of cyber security for their equipment and facilities. Other governments handle this topic differently. However, one thing is for certain: There are increasing risks of cyber attacks on critical power system infrastructures throughout the world which can have dangerous repercussions.

Thomas and Eugenio describe recent cyber security directives in Europe and North America and their implications for power system organizations around the world. They also discuss the challenges these organizations face in successfully implementing cyber security into their infrastructures and offer tips to meet these challenges.

Lastly, they describe how OMICRON is involved with cyber security and which solutions it offers to the power industry to deal with the growing threat of cyber attacks.

In electrical substations of higher voltage levels, capacitor voltage transformers, also called CVTs, or CCVTs, can be found.

VOTANO 100 now uses a new method that can determine the capacitances C1 and C2 on all CVT designs, combining two variable-frequency measurements at low voltage. It injects a constant current into the secondary winding and measures current and voltage accordingly. The first measurement determines the frequency dependent short-circuit impedance including C2.

The second measurement determines the frequency dependent short-circuit impedance including C1 and C2.

From both measurements, C1, C2, the capacitive ratio Kc, and the total capacitance Cr can be calculated. This method for measuring the CVT capacitance is integrated as a new test in VOTANO 100. VOTANO 100 can measure both the capacitance and the accuracy of the CVT, which is ideal for diagnostic purposes.

We are all aware about the present and increasing risk of devastating wildfires all over the world, especially those recently experienced in Australia and the western United States. Prolonged dry conditions in these regions have greatly increased the risk of wildfires starting and spreading with alarming speed.

Wildfires cause not only massive destruction to the power system infrastructure, often that same infrastructure is discovered to be the initial source of the fire. After all, it only takes a spark in dry, windy conditions.

After explaining the single components of the test system, the video shows in detail how to set it up.
