The electric power industry needs to measure extremely small resistances in the range of milli- or micro ohms. For instance, this needs to be done when measuring contact resistance in circuit breakers or disconnectors, or when measuring the resistance of joints, such as those used in bus bars or very low winding resistance. In order to allow for typical appliance-inrush-currents, the MCB must remain stable during a minor short-term overload. However, if the overload persists, the MCB must open the circuit after a certain period of time. During a short-circuit, an MCB must interrupt the current safely in order to minimize damage. MCB tripping characteristics show a thermal trigger for overloads, and a magnetic trigger for short-circuits.
