Energy transmission uses high voltage levels in order to transfer energy over long distances with minimum losses. In substations, the high voltage levels are transformed to medium and low voltage levels for distribution. The corresponding medium- and low-voltage power grids are highly interconnected, and thus require many circuit breakers in order to make or break any required connections.
However, the most important task of circuit breakers is probably breaking a fault current. Breaking high fault currents that are many times the rated current within a fraction of a second requires breakers to be in perfect condition. Thus, they must be regularly tested in order to make sure that they work when it really counts. Routine tests will typically include timing and contact resistance measurements. Additional tests allow a more comprehensive condition assessment of all breaker parts. These can include motor current, dynamic contact resistance, and contact travel. Test devices with an inbuilt power supply can even test breakers in undervoltage conditions and find the minimum voltages necessary for trip, close, and undervoltage coils. All of these tests combined reveal important information about the planning and execution of timely breaker maintenance. Condition-based maintenance can help preventing breaker malfunction, prolong breaker lifetime, and minimize unplanned outages; for a safe and reliable supply of electric power for everyone.
