The job that you as a protection tester must accomplish usually consists of testing
- protection function parameters and settings,
- individual protection functions,
- complete relays including logic and coordination between protection functions,
- and whole protection systems, including distributed systems.
For these tasks you need to inject steady state signals for a simplified representation of prefault, fault and postfault states, and transient signals for a realistic representation of the evolution of electrical quantities in the power grid. The best way to accomplish these tasks is with two complementary testing approaches and the appropriate pieces of software that we offer: Test Universe and RelaySimTest.
Always use the right tool for the right task to get the most benefit from their strengths. Test Universe focuses on protection functions and verifies accuracy, characteristics, and other settings. RelaySimTest is based on the electric power system for testing the entire protection system, including the simulation of connected CTs and VTs and the interaction with breakers and other IEDs.
Test Universe is based on the relay and its settings and RelaySimTest is based on the power system, or the relevant part thereof.
Test plans include an automatic assessment of relay responses to prefault, fault and postfault states in Test Universe, and a realistic simulation of events in the power grid in RelaySimTest. And the really great thing about RelaySimTest is it allows you to find out if your protection system, with its current settings, actually protects the power grid reliably.
Throughout the protection lifecycle, the combination of these tools enables you to validate your protection system efficiently and with maximum testing quality - in conventional, hybrid and digital substations.
