During commissioning, several tests on current and voltage transformers need to be performed to identify manufacturing errors or transportation damages, to verify correct installation and wiring and to measure the secondary burden. If problems occur during the operation of the plant, further tests will be performed to identify the cause of the error. Tests of distance relay teleprotection schemes should check both relays simultaneously, including their communication link.
This video shows a real test of a 110 kV overhead line. The protection was only out of service for one hour. The whole test could be conducted so efficiently, because it had been performed with OMICRON CMCs and RelaySimTest. This software allows the whole test to be controlled from one end of the line. CMGPS 588, a GPS controlled time reference, had been used to enable synchronized injection.

Important parameters of a protection current transformer are its ratio, its excitation curve, the knee point, its winding resistance, and the burden. In some applications, current transformers with secondary taps are commonly used. Each tap represents a different number of turns of the winding and therefore a different current transformer ratio. Operators have to deal with devices of all generations and specifications. Some relays still in use are electromechanical and operate on a 5 A nominal current, although a growing portion is made up of IEDs. In stations with automation systems according to IEC 61850, network technologies are used for different types of information exchange. Binary information like switch positions or switching commands can be transmitted via the substation network. Analog voltage and current values can also be transmitted. From instrument transformers or sensors, the merging unit collects the measured values, merges these sampled values into a data stream belonging to one feeder, and publishes them to the substation network.
