Traditional current transformer testing follows a black-box approach. The current transformer is solely assessed through its external behavior without considering what is happening inside. Three such black-box testing methods exist, differing in their comprehensiveness and the effort they involve: primary-current injection using a portable high-current source; secondary-voltage injection using a portable variac; primary-nominal current injection using a high-current source, a reference current transformer, a burden simulator and a bridge. CT Analyzer opens the black box through secondary injection with variable frequency and a patented low-voltage, low-frequency method for excitation measurement.

Synchronous multi-channel partial discharge (PD) measurement is advantageous because it increases measurement safety and it gathers more information about PD activity in less time. During the lifetime of a current transformer, many faults have to be cleared. Each of these faults may add remanence flux in the core - in a positive or negative direction. During a fault, the accumulated remanence will allow a much lower fault current to saturate the current transformer. This current transformer saturation might subsequently cause a maloperation of the protection system. With its RemAlyzer function, CT Analyzer can determine the extent of magnetic remanence present in a current transformer core.

The current transformer core has a major influence on the current transformer's behavior. Measuring the characteristics of the magnetic core at the beginning of the manufacturing process helps to ensures that the current transformer will - when its winding is added - fulfill the required specifications. The CT Analyzer uses a special accessory cable to measure the core's characteristics, such as its excitation curve and knee point value, it then recalculates the results for the final number of turns that will be wound.
