MEET YOUR OMICRON TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM It's good to be able to put a name to a face, so in each issue we’ll focus on an OMICRON specialist who is available to help you with your technical queries, 24/7. Meet Ali Abdulla, an Application and Training Engineer based at our OMICRON Service Centre in the UK. Ali is a Chartered Engineer having graduated from the University of Leicester in 2008 with a BEng in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. He joined OMICRON in 2015. We asked Ali a few questions to learn more about his role and how he spends his spare time. What’s your area of expertise? Ali: I specialize in designing and test- ing power management control, pro- tection systems and digital communi- cation. I provide OMICRON Academy training courses for all areas of protection testing and power util- ity communications. These include customized training courses and engineering services that are tailored to customer’s specific needs. I was recently involved in an innovation project called FITNESS, the first pilot project in the UK to assess the capa- bilities of a fully digital substation. I was part of the commissioning team responsible for testing the protection, controls and IEC 61850 communica- tion network – it was a real privilege to be involved. Aside from power engineering, what are your interests and hobbies? I enjoy staying active and trying new things, I also love travelling. In the summer I enjoy hiking and surfing; during winter I switch over to snow- boarding and ice skating. What do you enjoy most about your job? I’m often provided with interesting challenges, and encouraged to solve problems creatively. Since I spend a lot of time with our customers, I’m able to get great insight into the current challenges that engineers face in their daily work. This interaction helps me to stay at the forefront of my field. Favorite motto / inspirational quote: The problem is not the problem – the problem is your attitude about the problem.
