Magazine | Issue 1 2024 network infrastructure in advance. After setting everything up on site for a week, the project team was ready to start the test. At 8 am on the appointed day, the test network was disconnected from the rest of the grid and shut down. In addition to electrical quantities (voltages and currents), measurements taken during the black start included a multitude of machine parameters. These included various pressure readings, the position of the guide vanes, revolutions per minute, and numerous customer-specific measurements. The individual measurement points were spread across a total of seven sites, some of which were more than 100 km apart. These were time-synchronized via GPS for the measurement. This meant the measurement equipment could be controlled from the test control center, and measured values could be monitored in realtime. Approximately 110 GB of measurement data was recorded for further analysis. After about eight hours, the testing procedure was terminated on schedule, and the trial grid resumed regular operation. The results of the test were more than satisfactory. The grid was restored without incident. Using such a comprehensive measurement range allowed us to identify areas that could be further optimized to enable the black start to function even more smoothly. Together with the University of Duisburg-Essen, Amprion, and TransnetBW will subject the acquired data to further scientific analysis to extract even more helpful information. If a blackout occurs, there’ll be no need to panic – a Prepper 101 course will not be necessary. Preparing the measurement system at OMICRON in Klaus LISTEN TO THE PODCAST Interested in this topic?
