In his book, Alex provides insights into the effort involved for members of a working group like this. The IEC 61850 working group met three times a year, alternating meetings were held at the working group member’s companies, and care was taken to ensure that travel costs were balanced for everyone involved. During the meetings, the group worked on the content, and finally, a document was published in accordance with IEC rules. His description of the IEC working group’s activities corresponds to what I know from CIGRE and IEEE. As far as corporate earnings are concerned, the primary advantage for me is that a better product can be brought to the market faster with more in-depth development within a shorter development period. The key to developing successful new technologies and innovative products is listening to users and prospects to understand their needs and requirements better. During the joint work on documents, a lot of networking with proven experts in the target markets occurs. This helps me better understand users’ problems and identify new product applications. Therefore, it is clear that this kind of work benefits our customers, my company, and myself. Recently, I met my CIGRE colleague again. He convinced his employer that this type of work makes sense, and he’s going to continue working within our group. From my point of view, his employer has made a wise decision that clearly benefits his organization, his customers, and our entire industry.
