This is a story about a highly successful, yet technically challenging project we participated in, which aimed to ensure correct partial discharge measurements worldwide. With measurement variables like partial discharge, which are difficult to measure, who can be sure that measurement results are correct? The basis for correct measurement begins with agreeing on a reference so the same results can be compared and measured. Providing such references is one of the core duties of National Metrological Institutes (NMI), which allow them to compare international results and maintain the basis of an unbroken traceability chain (see factbox “Traceability results”). The easiest way to compare results is a so-called ring comparison, which is typically offered by an NMI with high technical competency for the measurement variable.
