The fourth OMICRON Power Utility Communication Tutorial & Workshop took place from April 9–11, 2019 at Burg Hemmersbach near Cologne in Germany and focused on the following topics:

Application and commissioning of IEC 61850 in automation, control and protection of electrical power systems.
Cyber security in Substation Automation Systems (SAS).

52 participants from 15 countries attended the focused tutorial presentations and the workshop to learn more about IEC 61850 communication, application and testing and practical cyber security measures for IEC 61850 station and process bus.

Many attendees also joined the optional IEC 61850 Warm-Up Training to familiarize themselves with the standard and technologies used, to be able to follow the tutorials and effectively use the workshop.

The third OMICRON Power Utility Communication Tutorial & Workshop took place from April 10–12, 2018 at Schloss Löwenstein near Frankfurt in Germany and focused on the engineering and commissioning of IEC 61850 in automation, control and protection of electrical power systems.

44 participants from 14 countries attended the focused tutorials and the workshop to learn more about IEC 61850 communication, application and testing.

Many attendees also joined the optional IEC 61850 Warm-up training to familiarize themselves with the standard and technologies used, to be able to follow the tutorials and effectively use the workshop.

Power engineers require reliable tools to work with. Therefore, we put great efforts in the manufacturing, testing and calibration of our products. The video provides an inside look into this process.

For the manufacturing of components, we work together with selected, local partners with whom we have a long-term relationship. After manufacture, they run first automated tests such as flying probe and optical inspection on every single board.

When the boards come in to OMICRON, they are being tested again, so that only tested boards will be assembled to a device. Then we run a number of tests on each device in order to find any potential failures that would show only under “stress”. We start with a high voltage test, followed by a 72h heat run-in or “burn-in” test, with periods of high and low temperatures alternating, while the devices are in operation.

During calibration and adjustment, we warm up the device to consider component drifting. We collect all of the data and use it for analysis, reporting and constant improvement.

The electric power industry needs to measure extremely small resistances in the range of milli- or micro ohms. For instance, this needs to be done when measuring contact resistance in circuit breakers or disconnectors, or when measuring the resistance of joints, such as those used in bus bars or very low winding resistance. Measuring resistances as small as these requires what is called a four-wire measurement.

Due to the increasing complexity of the electrical grid, training staff has become a priority for many power system operators. An increasing number of utilities, service providers and manufacturers have chosen the OMICRON Academy for their training. Frequency Response Analysis allows the integrity of the active part of a power transformer to be verified without opening it. FRA is the most sensitive method for detecting winding deformation. This method can also reveal short circuits between turns, strands or windings, or open circuits. This method can also identify core faults including mechanical deformation, floating core ground, or shorted core laminates. When manufacturers perform ratio and winding resistance tests at the end of the production process or during factory acceptance testing, time is costly and performing such tests efficiently is crucial. When performing diagnostic tests on site, there's also a limited window of time.
