Substation Measurements
End Partial Data Woes
The increasing use of digital communication calls for tools that can handle analog and digital measurements. Conventional recorders often provide partial information or limited resolution, making it difficult to analyze the root cause of misoperations and malfunctions. Our measurement solutions give protection, automation, and control (PAC) engineers a view of the entire substation. A correlated display of currents, voltages, and binary states helps them understand PAC system behavior during grid faults and switching events for optimization.
Challenges
Quick Solutions for Diverse Conditions
Ad-hoc measurements during testing
During PAC system commissioning or maintenance tests, engineers often need to run plausibility checks to analyze faults and protection behavior. Suitable equipment and a simple setup let them perform these spontaneous tasks efficiently.
Hybrid measurements
The trend toward digitalization and its introduction to substation communication networks presents new challenges for measuring and troubleshooting PAC systems. Merging conventional power system signals with IEC 61850 network messages is essential.
Unattended fault recording
Faults happen sporadically, sometimes under unknown conditions, making quick resolution critical. Sophisticated triggers help create reliable recordings for these sporadic events.
Distributed measurement
Analyzing decentralized PAC functions, fault propagation and other power grid events often requires measurements in different locations. Distributed measurement solutions with multiple time-synchronized devices can meet this need.

Merging Unit and LPIT Testing
Use DANEO 400 to compare analog inputs with the digital outputs of your merging units (MU) and low-power instrument transformers (LPIT). Pair it with the CMC 500 for secondary injection, or use the CPC 100 or CPX 200 for primary-side injection. Visualize signal waveforms, measurement values, and Sampled Values protocol details. Trigger automatic recordings when quality issues appear. Verify MU performance by measuring packet delays and intervals.
“The reliable interaction of all DANEO 400 devices throughout the entire test setup and the ability to control them from a single operating station has been a significant advantage for us. We have repeatedly benefited from a rapid, detailed online measured values analysis during testing.”
Dr. Robert Dommerque, Amprion
Can I perform long‑term recordings with OMICRON’s substation measurement solutions?
Yes, using the DANEO Control software with the DANEO 400 and MBX2 devices offers substantial internal storage for long-term recordings. The EnerLyzer software with CMC devices can store live data from the buffer on the PC.
Can I operate unattended devices to record rare events and troubleshoot them afterward?
Yes, the DANEO 400 and MBX2 can be configured with DANEO Control and left unattended to be triggered by a sporadic power system or network traffic event. Later, the recordings can be downloaded with DANEO Control for documentation and troubleshooting. Unattended recording is less practical with EnerLyzer because the PC running the software must be continuously connected to the CMC device.
Can I use multiple measurement devices as a distributed system?
Yes, DANEO Control supports the use of multiple DANEO 400 and MBX2 devices in your measurement system, which is configured and controlled in a single file. The live values and recordings are collected from all units to be visualized and analyzed further in DANEO Control.
Using EnerLyzer with CMC requires a dedicated PC for each measurement device, and the recordings are analyzed separately.
Can I also analyze the IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled Values protocol details?
Yes, this is possible with DANEO Control. The software visualizes all IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled Values protocol details including live values and packet statistics.
Can I also record and analyze PCAP network traffic?
Yes, DANEO Control records network traffic in PCAP and provides a sophisticated analysis. Exporting and opening recordings with the Wireshark network protocol analyzer is also possible.
