The Protection Testing Library (PTL) is a comprehensive collection of test templates. It supports you with predefined test plans for an efficient testing workflow. Test settings are automatically calculated within XRIO Converters from your entered or imported relay settings, eliminating manual effort and minimizing errors for reliable testing.
The templates include tests for main and backup protection functions and additional functions from the PTL’s standardized applications, including Feeder, Line, Transformer, Generator, Motor, Recloser, Capacitor Bank, and Railway Catenary. Thanks to the development with our approved Test Universe software using the XRIO and LinkToXRIO technology, and the addition of our RelaySimTest software, you can use their full functionality to customize PTL test templates according to your requirements.

How can I access the PTL and does it require an additional license?
You can download the PTL from our Customer Portal and open installed PTL documents via the Test Universe start page. The PTL is available for Test Universe and RelaySimTest users and requires no extra license.
Which protection relays does the PTL support?
The PTL provides test templates for over 500 different types of protection relays from manufacturers such as ABB, GE, Hitachi Energy, Ingeteam, NR Electric, Schneider Electric, Siemens, SEL, and more. A complete list is available in the Customer Portal.
Which protection functions does the PTL cover?
PTL test templates cover the most important main and backup protection functions, as well as additional functions. The test scope is defined in the PTL User Manual and depends on the application, such as Feeder, Line, Transformer, Generator, Motor, Recloser, Capacitor Bank, and Railway Catenary.
Does the PTL provide a plug-and-play solution?
Since testing requirements may differ from one utility to another, and the protection functions to be tested may vary by region, voltage level, and protection concept, PTL test templates cannot be designed as a one-size-fits-all, plug-and-play solution. Instead, the templates provide tests for a defined functional scope that covers the most important main and backup protection functions, along with selected additional functions. You can adapt and extend the test templates to meet your specific testing requirements.
Can I customize PTL test templates to fit company-specific testing standards?
Yes, you can customize the PTL test templates and XRIO Converters to meet individual testing requirements using the full functionality of Test Universe and RelaySimTest.

Yes, the PTL provides a general user manual combined with a template-specific one. The conversion from relay settings to test values can also be traced directly in the test plans and XRIO Converters thanks to Test Universe’s functionality.
