Low resistance values at all connection points - circuit breaker and disconnector contacts as well as any joint - assure low power dissipation. Keeping the equipment's temperature within its specifications is a precondition for normal and correct operation over its expected lifetime. The low contact resistance of circuit breakers and disconnector switches as well as any joints can be confirmed by micro resistance measurement.

This method can also identify core faults including mechanical deformation, floating core ground, or shorted core laminates. Tap changer problems, such as bad contacts in the tap selector or the diverter switch, can also be found. Three such black-box testing methods exist, differing in their comprehensiveness and the effort they involve: primary-current injection using a portable high-current source; secondary-voltage injection using a portable variac; primary-nominal current injection using a high-current source, a reference current transformer, a burden simulator and a bridge. During a fault, the accumulated remanence will allow a much lower fault current to saturate the current transformer. This current transformer saturation might subsequently cause a maloperation of the protection system.
