With software version 4.10, we have improved RelaySimTest in several ways.

The two most important changes include the addition of a new simulation model for an induction motor (or asynchronous motor) and the possibility to simulate infeed events.

With these major additions, you can now test Motor Bus Transfer schemes, Motor protection, or Rate of Change of Frequency (ROCOF) protection using the system-based testing approach.

Besides these big changes, a number of smaller improvements have also been made, including improvements of the Interactive System Simulation and the capabilities of RelaySimTest in terms of testing IEC 61850 protection systems.

RelaySimTest is a software solution for system-based protection testing with OMICRON test equipment. The test approach is independent of relay type, manufacturer, and parameter settings. Instead, RelaySimTest completely focuses on the correct behavior of the protection system by simulating realistic power system events.

The Interactive System Simulation is a completely new test case type, which is available to all RelaySimTest customers with a CMC test set with NET-2 interface or an ARCO 400. No additional license is required. Like the Test Universe module QuickCMC, the Interactive System Simulation can continuously output the current state of the power system simulation. By changing settings, breaker and disconnector positions and adding faults, the output values will change throughout execution. Trip and close commands from the IEDs will also be integrated as breaker open and close events in non-real time.

Like Quick CMC the Interactive System Simulation is a Swiss army knife in your system-based testing workflow. Some of the potential applications we anticipate:
• Wiring, metering, and functional checks especially in setups with multiple test sets
• Training facilities where technicians are trained to operate IEDs under realistic system conditions
• Testing of long running restoration schemes

The intermediate infeed effect is a phenomenon that occurs in multi-terminal distance protection schemes. For example, the additional current by a third terminal will rise the voltage at the intermediate busbar – this leads to an incorrectly calculated impedance within the protective relay.

The impedance increases and thus the distance protection could detect the fault location too far away and trip in a wrong zone. The protection system will not function as desired and will violate requirements for speed and selectivity. Therefore, it is important for protection engineers to know the effect and handle it correctly.

Modern protective relays use complex algorithms and adapt to network and failures. Simple function tests are often no longer sufficient for testing such relays. Our unique software RelaySimTest covers these new demands with a transient simulation of the primary power system. It can reveal failures created during calculations as well as during setup of the relay or a protection scheme, requiring only a minimum of test steps.

The most common type of transformer protection is differential protection. The principle behind differential protection is Kirchhoff's nodal law. It states that the algebraic sum of currents at a node must be zero. This law can be used to formulate a condition that detects a fault in the protected area.

We apply the differential protection principle not only to transformers, but also to rotating machines, busbars and lines as well.

This video shows a real test of a 110 kV overhead line. The protection was only out of service for one hour. The whole test could be conducted so efficiently, because it had been performed with OMICRON CMCs and RelaySimTest. This software allows the whole test to be controlled from one end of the line. CMGPS 588, a GPS controlled time reference, had been used to enable synchronized injection.

Cały test można było przeprowadzić tak sprawnie dzięki użyciu testerów OMICRON CMC i programu RelaySimTest. Pozwala on sterować całym testem z jednego końca linii. Aby podać sygnały synchronicznie, użyto wzorca czasu sterowanego przez GPS, urządzenia CMGPS 588.
