On-load tap changers, also known as O-L-T-Cs, are devices fitted on to power transformers that regulate the output voltage to required levels to maintain a stable voltage level in the electrical grid.

To check the reliability of OLTCs, a variety of advanced diagnostic methods have been developed, including the new vibro-acoustic measurement (also known as VAM), which uses vibrations to assess OLTC condition.

In this episode of Energy Talks, OLTC diagnostic experts Dr. Karsten Viereck from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen and OMICRON applications engineer Christoph Engelen talk about the origins and development of the vibro-acoustic measurement, how and when it is performed, how it compliments other OLTC diagnostic methods, as well as how the data is analyzed.

RelaySimTest is a software solution for system-based protection testing with OMICRON test equipment. The test approach is independent of relay type, manufacturer, and parameter settings. Instead, RelaySimTest completely focuses on the correct behavior of the protection system by simulating realistic power system events.

The Interactive System Simulation is a completely new test case type, which is available to all RelaySimTest customers with a CMC test set with NET-2 interface or an ARCO 400. No additional license is required. Like the Test Universe module QuickCMC, the Interactive System Simulation can continuously output the current state of the power system simulation. By changing settings, breaker and disconnector positions and adding faults, the output values will change throughout execution. Trip and close commands from the IEDs will also be integrated as breaker open and close events in non-real time.

Like Quick CMC the Interactive System Simulation is a Swiss army knife in your system-based testing workflow. Some of the potential applications we anticipate:
• Wiring, metering, and functional checks especially in setups with multiple test sets
• Training facilities where technicians are trained to operate IEDs under realistic system conditions
• Testing of long running restoration schemes
• Providing realistic system conditions for resilience testing of PAC systems under cyber attacks

Large-scale wind parks utilize different types of transformers, including cast-resin, also known as dry-type transformers, installed in the wind turbines.

The most common reason for failure in various types of transformers is the electric breakdown of the insulation due to a wide variety of factors. Partial discharge (PD) measurement and analysis performed during commissioning and in a periodic maintenance plan can reduce the risk of in-service transformer failures.

In this episode, OMICRON partial discharge (PD) testing experts Christoph Engelen and Dr. Alex Kraetge discuss the importance of performing off-line PD measurements on cast-resin transformers used in wind park turbines to prevent their in-service failure. They also describe how the related measurement challenges of limited space and surrounding noise can best be overcome with the right diagnostic methods and tools.
